Anne Bradstreet: America’s First Poet

When Anne Bradstreet sailed to the American colonies in 1630, life was tough. She faced harsh winters, hard work, and a brand-new world. But Anne had something special: a love for words.

At a time when many people believed only men should be educated or write for others, Anne refused to ignore the gifts God had given her. She wrote poems about her life—her worries, her hopes, her faith, and the wild new land around her. Her words were so powerful that she became the first published poet in America!

Young readers today can step into Anne’s world through her poetry. They’ll get a glimpse of early American colonial life and the challenges and joys she faced. Anne’s poems are also a reminder of God’s timeless beauty, faithfulness, and promises—shining through even in the hardest times.
